In the world of professional football, where I lived for 18 years, your biography didn’t matter. Skin color didn’t matter. Religion didn’t matter. Economic background didn’t matter. The only things that mattered were character and performance.

They
say that the best referees are the ones you don't notice. That
disqualifies just about everyone currently enforcing the rules—or not
enforcing them—on NFL football fields this fall. The season ought to
have fans talking about the return of Peyton Manning, or the amazing
upsets we're already seen, or more close games than I can remember. But
all anyone wants to talk about is the abysmal officiating by replacement
referees.

To succeed in football and in business, I worked with a lot of
people. I learned how to figure out who the great people were, people
who were doing the right thing, people with great ethics who I could
trust and learn a lot from. I also learned how to identify people who
weren’t trying to do the right thing.

In every field, you learn very quickly the value of great leadership.
Whether it was on the football field or in the business world, I’ve
learned from great leaders and seen just how critically important they
are to their organizations. But the leadership I’ve seen in athletics
and business towers over most of the leadership in Washington these
days.
